Since the birth of the American railroad in 1828 railroads have played a key role in both uniting and expanding America.

Today the American railroad is slowly disappearing. Over fifty percent of all railroad tracks laid in the United States has been abandoned and torn up. For every mile of track scrapped, another link to our past is lost forever. A few railroads have been saved from this fate and turned into tourist railways.

These tourist railroads are a link to our past. They take us away from the fast paced world of today and into a slower environment of beauty and moving history, and create a passion to preserve our transportation roots.

In this program we cross the United States form east to west telling the stories of 21 historic scenic tourist railways. From New England, across the heartland, through the Rockies, and ending up in Alaska. In addition, we also visit the Golden Spike National Historic Site and show how the driving of a single spike changed this nation forever.

As an added bonus, at the end of this program we show how the Great Smoky Mountain Railway staged the massive train wreck in the blockbuster movie, "The Fugitive," filmed on their tracks.
