Steamtown National Historic Site
Scranton, Pennsylvania
Steamtown National Historic Site preserves an era that slipped from consciousness virtually unnoticed. Today, you can relive the age of steam railroading as these fire-breathing monsters lumber back to life. The cinders, grease, oil, steam, and people of steam railroading have returned.
In the earlier part of the 20th century, Northeastern Pennsylvania sparked rapid growth in the rail industry that ultimately extended across the United States. The Lackawanna Iron & Coal Company (LI&C) in Scranton was one of the first producers of the iron T-rail in the United States. Without the iron T-rail, the country's railway system could not have exited; and the LI&C, in turn, could not have shipped its product in the amounts needed.
The museum complex includes a Visitor Center, History Museum, Theater, Technology Museum and Roundhouse. You can also enjoy a Ranger led tour or shop in the museum store.
The Steamtown National Historic Site is open seven days a week, year-round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
